kiteboarding Guajira
Martin Vega and Sophie Jackl, a couple passionate about extreme sports, almost 10 years ago we fell in love at sea practicing Kiteboarding, an extreme sport that depends on the wind. Martin grew up in Puerto Colombia and lived his whole life at sea, starting with windsurfing when he was only 12 years old, practicing, teaching and competing. In 2005 he learned Kiteboarding and brought it to Puerto Velero.
He has been teaching water sports and running schools for almost 20 years nautical. He found his passion in sports and the support of young athletes. Sophie, a native of Germany, was a student of Martin and He fell in love not only with the sport and La Guajira but also with the instructor! she studied International Development in Vienna and last year founded the Jouktai Foundation.
kiteboarding Guajira
She is now the administrator of the school and the president of the foundation. They open the first Kiteboarding Guajira school in 2011. They arrived at Cabo de la Vela, a town in nowhere, in the middle of the desert. The beginning was hard, only tourists arrived in the high seasons, until people found out that it was the perfect place to practice Kiteboarding.
The sport attracted a lot of attention to the young people of the Cape. We started teaching Nelson first, a Wayuu boy who has 10 siblings. They continued with his brother, cousins, friends, sister …. This boy is now 20 years old and owns from his own Kite school together with his brother Adalberto.
Adalberto is part of the foundation and thanks to the support of many friends and clients we were able to send him to China, to qualify for the Olympic games. From fishing and crafts, these young people became the protagonists of their lives and their future with greater opportunities and a more open view, from 0 to 5 Kite schools and constant and sustainable tourism throughout the year.
